Wordless Wednesday – posing in 1953 and 1973

Barber and Dewey great grandparents pose for a photo in 1953

Both sets of Maternal Great Grandparents in 1953…

Ernest and Maude Barber, with Susan and Ernest Dewey, at the wedding of their granddaughter Glenda Ann Dewey to Stephen Leslie Martin at Witchford, 1973.

and by complete serendipity, they pose in the same order 20 years later, in 1973.

About Andrew Martin

+Andrew Martin is owner and lead writer for History Repeating and Family Tree UK. Genealogist, historian, writer, photographer and would-be archaeologist. He'd love a time machine, but worries that it might take all the fun out of it.

  1. Victorian Supersleuth says:

What a fascinating pair of photos! It seems to be only the clothes that have changed that much in 20 years…

    • Indeed, 53-73 i’d have expected the clothing to change a bit more.

It’s by complete chance that they are standing in the same formation – and the photos were also taken only about 1 mile apart.

I also only really discovered the older photo in the last few weeks – the original photo is only 2.5″ by 3.5″, and was tucked in amongst a load of others the same size at the back of an album so i’d not really looked at it properly. Once i realised its significance, I had to scan and enlarge it.

  2. How wonderful! Thank you for sharing!
